The Sean Edwards foundation was established in 2013 as a result of a tragedy involving one of Britain’s most promising motorsports stars, Sean Edwards. Knowing that the fatal accident could have been avoided if better safety measures had been in place, Sean’s mother Daphne McKinley developed the foundation with a chief objective of raising safety awareness in motorsport.

The SEF is inspired by individuals who work hard to achieve their dreams, setting a precedent for the foundation to do the same and creating a reality where it is possible to achieve goals without limitations. Who better to act an ambassador than Sheldon Van Der Linde, who at just 19 years old has already had a startling amount of success in his career to date.

In similar beginnings to both Vettel and Hamilton, Van Der Linde began karting at the age of 6, displaying promise and talent from early on and making his mark in junior categories before entering into car racing, winning his first season and making history as the youngest driver to win a national championship in South Africa.

In 2015 Sheldon was nominated for the South African Motorsportsman of the year.

In 2016 Van Der Linde competed in the Audi Sport TT Cup, securing 4 wins and several podiums.

2018 will be a year to remember for the likeable young sport star for various reasons. Sheldon became vice champion in ADAC GT Masters, racing for Audi Sport. In this year he was named as the Sean Edwards Foundation young driver of the year. Finally, Van Der Linde was invited by BMW Motorsport to attend the DTM Young Driver Test, securing a seat for 2019 and achieving his dream of racing in the DTM.

The tag line on Sheldon’s official webpage speaks volumes; ‘When you’re not first you’re last’. If Sheldon can achieve his dreams in just 5 years of racing, he has an exciting future ahead. 2019 will be a year to watch out for the young South African, and his DTM debut will be eagerly anticipated by his many fans.
